Facing a mental health problem can be challenging to deal with on your own. Individually therapy can be very beneficial as the therapist will be able to listen and more importantly guide you on how to overcome these issues. And that’s what Individual counselling is all about. Read on to find out more.

What is individual Counselling?

Individual counselling often referred to as psychotherapy or talk therapy, it is a process in which you have a one-on-one conversation with a professional psychotherapist. A trained counsellor can help you with any mental health or relationship problem you are facing. Some problems can include anxiety, depression, anger, family issues, abuse, insomnia, sexuality, addiction, eating disorder, etc.

Your discussions are safe and confidential between you and your therapist. A therapist helps you learn skills so you can handle stressful situations, how you can control your thoughts and feelings and assists you in having a more positive mindset and living a happier life.

Who can benefit from Psychotherapy?

Anyone who’s having difficulty living a healthy and happy life because of their mental health can benefit from individual counselling. Psychotherapy has changed many lives over the years. People underestimate the powerful benefits it can have. You can benefit from psychotherapy if you face any or some of the following problems:

  • You worry unnecessarily or always feel on edge

  • You feel unable to cope with your daily problems

  • You cannot control your emotions and feel overwhelmed

  • Your problems never get better despite getting support from friends or family members

  • You have difficulty concentrating on school or work and can’t seem to focus on anything

  • You have thoughts of self-harm and suicide

  • You have a negative outlook on life

  • You are struggling with substance abuse

  • You try to avoid your feelings or have an addiction

  • You feel angered and frustrated all the time

Different Types of Individual Therapies

There are different modalities of Psychotherapy. They focus on building a trusted relationship between a client and a therapist. Each one of these works slightly differently, but the main focus of every technique is to understand what the client is struggling with and help by providing solutions with different thinking patterns and behavioral changes. Some common types are:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps you improve your thinking by changing the way you think. It focuses on challenging your negative thought patterns or behaviors and offers analytical techniques for improving emotional regulation. Your therapist helps you develop coping strategies and techniques which you can use to tackle your problems and irrational thinking patterns. The goal is to teach practical approaches for dealing with different problems that arise.

These are some of the other modalities our therapists use :

Dialectic Behavioral Therapy

DBT is another form of CBT that teaches people how they can live in the moment, regulate emotions and cope with stress. In individual therapy, a person learns how to incorporate coping techniques into one’s life challenges. A DBT therapy session lasts typically for 60 minutes and takes place usually once a week. Radhika, Lolita, Jovita and Gauri use DBT along with other modalities with their clients.

Two chair Therapy

In this technique, two chairs are placed facing one another. The client sits on one chair, and the other chair is empty. You imagine a clone or part of yourself sitting in that chair and have a dialogue with him. You hold one side of the argument and your imaginary self holds the other. As you engage in a discussion by verbalizing what’s going on, your abstract thoughts come into existence and become clearer. Your therapist analyzes and helps you understand your feelings better and provides solutions as to how you can solve this issue. Svetlana and Sumbul have experience in this technique and work with their clients to resolve underlying concerns.

Inner Child Therapy

The “Inner Child” refers to the parts of us that still behave like children. These are the most emotional and primal aspects of our personality. If you had a tough childhood, many of your behaviors followed you to adulthood and cause problems. This therapy focuses on addressing and solving your most essential problems you are facing and how you can repair them to think and behave in a better and positive way. It helps you discover yourself and see the roots of all your problems so you can reform them and become a better version of yourself. Joel would be a great fit for inner child therapy!

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT helps you psychologically develop a thick skin so you can accept and deal with the problems that come in life. It is a mindfulness-based therapy that focuses on the greater well-being by overcoming any negative thoughts and circumstances. It also addresses your commitment to making changes so you can have better control over your life. It has three main goals. Accept your reactions and be present, choose the correct direction and then take action. Zahba and Samuele would be a good fit if you are looking into this modality.

Internal Family System Therapy (IFS)

IFS will help address different sub-personalities. You can think of them as different parts of your personality. These sub-personalities are different elements such as angry and aggressive, that are harmful while other parts try to help you stay safe from them. When their sub-personalities conflict with one another, you face difficulties, and that’s what IFS helps you overcome by understanding different aspects of your personality. Micaela and Natasha have extensive background with IFS should you consider this modality.

Conclusion:

We can wrap it up by saying that individual counselling can help you overcome whatever difficulties you’re facing and help you become much better versions of yourself. Therapy can change your outlook on life and teach you how to deal with your problems effectively, so you can have a positive outlook on life and become a better person.
